Delavan Lions Club President Marilyn Carlson, left, presents a $500 check to city of Delavan Parks Department Foreman Ed Wichman (center) and Parks and Recreation Department Director Tom Klug for the purchase of trees. Following along with a Lions Club International initiative for 2012, the Delavan Lions Club put money toward the planting of trees in its community. The $500 will go toward the purchase of about 15 saplings of various species this spring, which the city will tend to over the summer. In fall, club members plan to assist in planting the trees at various public locations throughout the city.

Advance tickets for this St. Patrick’s treat are $10 and are available from any Delavan Lions Club or the Village Supper Club.

You may buy them at the event for $11. Cost for kids under 7 years is $5. The buffet dinner is available from 11:30 a.m. until 7 p.m.

The camp serves children of all ages with a variety of disabilities, primarily vision-related. Much of the fundraising the Delavan Lions Club does goes to helping the camp run and provide qualified counselors and staff who help children lead enjoyable, fulfilling lives.

The Delavan Lions Club’s 48th annual, all-you-can-eat corned beef and cabbage and baked chicken dinner will be held Sunday, March 13, at the Village Supper Club. It includes coffee or milk and all of the trimmings — baked chicken, potatoes, carrots, horseradish, bread and butter.

• Pam Carper of Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Walworth County was a special guest. She gave a presentation about the new Lunch Buddies Program coming to Wileman Elementary School in Delavan. The program is also slated to start at elementary schools in Elkhorn and Lake Geneva.

• Wisconsin Lions have a goal to create a $25 million endowment fund to support the Wisconsin Lions Camp. The goal is to have every Lion’s Club member in the state donate at least $200 per year over the next five years to make the fund sustainable to support the camp on interest earnings only.

• Club President Lion Donna Sorensen reported that the Delavan Club was one of the top giving clubs in District 27-A1 when the Parade of Checks were announced at a district meeting recently. The Delavan club is consistently in the top 10 clubs for giving and is not in the top 10 percent in the district as far as size goes. Way go go, Delavan!

• Lion President Donna also recognized the work of Past President Lion John Stack. Lion John, a longtime Lions Club member, was president for the 2009-10 session.

• Lion Jimmy Merrill reported donating more than 500 pairs of used prescription glasses to the Lions Eye Bank of Wisconsin. Glasses were collected from drop-box donations throughout the Delavan community. They’ll go toward the Lions goal of Giving the Gift of Sight to those in need. It’s a mission we can all be proud of.

• The Delavan Club welcomed its newest member, Lion Cindy Bickle, wife of Lion Brian Bickle. She and Brian got off to a great start by attending the District Convention recently. Lion Cindy received an International Pin for being the newest member at the convention. The couple also received pins from the district governor for winning the scavenger hunt. Great job, Lion Cindy and Lion Brian.

• Lions members helped raise more than $1,100 for the Salvation Army by ringing bells at Delavan locations this holiday season. In total, Walworth County collected close to $63,000 from its Red Kettle Campaign. We were glad to be a part of it. Lions Rick and Karen Heine even dressed up as Santa and Mrs. Clause to help spread holiday cheer and get a few more coins in the kettle.

Lions Highway Cleanup, October 2010

Delavan Lions Club members hit the road Oct. 13 to do a little highway cleanup. The club has “adopted” the stretch of highway 50 east of Delavan from County F to Highway 67. Club members perform roadside cleanups several times throughout the spring, summer and fall, collecting and disposing of trash properly.

Shifts are four hours each. The earliest shift starts at 10 a.m., while the latest starts at 6 p.m.
